Toenail fungus (Onychomycosis) is a contagious infection of fungus in the nail cells. It can be treated in several different ways. Laser treatment is one effective and safe way of treating the fungus.  For most patients, two easy treatments will put you on the road to recovery.

THE PROCESS

If you think you may have a fungal infection of the toenail, the first step is making an appointment with us at the office of Amy DeGirolamo, DPM.

After a thorough exam, a sample of your nail is typically sent to a lab to determine if in fact you have a fungal infection of the nail as there are other conditions that can cause a very similar appearance.

The nail specimen will be examined under a microscope to determine if there is fungus present within your nail. If you have failed previous oral antifungal therapy, we have a special test we can order to check for drug resistance. If you have a fungal nail, the different treatment options will be discussed.

THE OPTIONS

Once a fungal infection is verified, there are multiple treatment options available.

One safe and effective method is Laser Treatment. Typically two treatments are performed one month apart, though in some cases more treatments may be necessary.

Oral antifungal therapy is an option for those patients who are relatively healthy and a simple blood test is typically ordered to verify that your body can handle the medication.

Topical therapy can be prescribed and comes in several different forms. One of the downfalls of topical therapy is that it cannot penetrate normal nail polish. This is no longer an issue as WE CARRY A SPECIALTY LINE OF NON-TOXIC VEGAN NAIL POLISH that is permeable to topically applied medications as well as having its own anti-fungal properties. Topical medications can be applied to the nail without the need to remove the polish!
